Ethiopian Man Posing as Eritrean Arrested for Rape in London

An Ethiopian man named Bruke Desalegn, who has been pretending to be Eritrean, was arrested for raping a 60-year-old man in London in 2025. The attack took place outside St John’s Church in Harrow on 23 July 2025, lasting about 20 minutes after he dragged the intoxicated victim behind a fence.

Amharic Name and Court Translator Demand
The name Bruke Desalegn is an Ethiopian Amharic name. At court the suspect demanded an Eritrean translator because he does not speak Tigrinya or English, even though both are official languages in Eritrea.

Wider Pattern of Asylum Fraud
This incident of Ethiopian citizens fleeing to the EU while posing as Eritreans raises questions about why European countries do not carry out proper background checks, instead of blaming every crime on Eritrean refugees.

2024 Daily Mail Report on Asylum Fraud by Ethiopians Entering UK as Eritreans
In 2024 the British Mail published a report confirming that many Ethiopian citizens were caught committing asylum fraud by pretending to be Eritreans. In one case an Ethiopian migrant told his Ethiopian audience on TikTok how to pretend to be Eritrean until British authorities discovered it.

All in All
Stronger nationality and background checks are needed to stop this fraud and protect the public.
